Brewing Medicinal Pique (or, Fire Cider)

Knowledge Share Description

Steeping herbs and vegetables in vinegar as a way to make medicine is something folks have done, across the globe, and for thousands of years in support of our wellbeing and immune systems, in particular. Recipes may vary depending the region of the world or community of people from where it is rooted, and we recognize this rich variety of herbal vinegars as crucial to the maintenance of our health.
In this knowledge share we will better understand “fire cider,” a term sometimes used to describe a powerful, and simple to make, infusion of medicinal herbs (like rosemary, oregano, cilantro) and vegetables (like peppers, onion, and garlic, etc.) in apple cider vinegar. In essence, it is a medicinal pique; like a Caribbean, vinegar-based hot sauce.
Centering the need to take care of ourselves and one another, during a global pandemic and beyond, we will formulate a shared understanding of what fire cider is, why it is a supportive supplement for our immune systems, and how to confidently prepare it utilizing accessible ingredients. Participants will make fire cider together, discussing the healing properties of the medicinal plants and herbs that’ll steep for a month. There will be room for folks to share and compare their recipes and talk dosage for this immune-boosting brew.
