Palestinian Herbalism and The Land

Knowledge Share Description

We are honored to host Amanny Asell Ahmad visiting from Palestine for a day of deepening relationship with the land. Please join Amanny, founder of the Palestinian Plant Archive for a discussion and plant walk around the land. We will be learning about the roles of plants as food and medicine, their place in Palestinian culture, and how working with plants as healing allies fits into practical resistance to historical and ongoing oppression in the context of the Palestinian struggle.

We will also discuss how every day assaults on the land of Palestine & the human & non-human life it holds threaten what remains of the delicate ecosystems & symbiotic relationships created over generations. Everyday more land is seized & emptied of life, as people are stopped from reaching the crops they've tended for generations, as trees are bulldozed and burned, as our people are murdered and disappeared, all in the name of settler colonialism. The occupation continues to obsess over erasing us completely, as we once were, have been, or will be, and we continue to resist and remain.

The Palestinian Plant archive is a project that gathers, archives and transmutes plant & human relationships and knowledge within the context of Palestine. Its purpose is to safeguard vital historical, cultural, and scientific knowledge inherited from past generations, while also making the information usable, accessible, and interactive through various media and resources.

Facilitator

amanny ahmad is a Palestinian artist, cook, land worker, and folk herbalist. In her research-based practice, she studies things small & large: whole systems design, food as language, land as life, historical & contemporary relationships between humans & non-humans, botany, mycology, indigenous culinary traditions & plant use; and how those things can teach us about preservation, survival, and world-making. Her research culminates in a variety of forms: writing, photographs, objects, garden design, fermentation, herbal preparations, and most publicly, large scale meals, often cooked over live fire, incorporating local wild ingredients.Being in, on, of, and with the land is her main priority & joy.
