Knowledge Share Description
In this knowledge share, Tourmaline will share her experience with prayer work, including Marsha P. Johnson’s teaching: “a flower that lives forever and ever is a flower inside of me.” As the author of Marsha’s biography and an inheritor of her legacy, Tourmaline will share the teachings she has learned from Marsha, reflecting on the spiritual wisdom, practices, and visions that continue to move through Marsha’s life, words, and work.
Through prayer, archival content, and moving images, Tourmaline will invite participants into a deeper exploration of how Marsha’s teachings continue to expand our collective imagination about a more pleasurable present and future. Together, we will reflect on how memory, love, spirituality, and legacy can guide pathways toward healing, liberation, joy, and collective possibility.

Tourmaline A Guggenheim Fellow and TIME100 Honoree, Tourmaline is an artist, filmmaker, and writer. Tourmaline’s history-making book MARSHA (May 2025) is the first definitive biography of the revolutionary Black trans activist Marsha P. Johnson. Her art is in the permanent collections of The Met, MoMA, Tate, and the Whitney. Her award-winning films — including the critically acclaimed Happy Birthday, Marsha! — have been widely recognized for their unique blend of historical narrative and speculative futurism. She has built a career rooted in community organizing and trans liberation, and is a transformative voice in movements for racial, economic, and gender justice.
